Terminating

15 11 2010

This Wednesday (18th) there is a great opportunity to catch one of the Outburst Queer Arts Festival highlights for absolutely free and as a private viewing for Queen’s LGBT students, staff and friends.

So what’s the play??…

TERMINATING
by Tony Kushner
Directed by Alyson Campbell (wreckedallprods)
Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 75,” this 30-minute play is classic Kushner in its robust tirades against everything from human ambivalence and existential paradoxes to window curtains and the smell of anal sex.

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the LGBT Staff Network, witness some fastastic theatre and have a social drink afterwards.

All welcome, free entry. 7:30pm The Snack Bar, 3rd Floor of the SU (next to Queen’s Radio).

Cohesion, Sharing and Integration Consultation

27 09 2010

The Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister have agreed to host an LGB&T specific sectoral consultation event regarding their draft Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration.

Throughout the document there are references to creating a culture of rights, responsibility and respect. Officials from OFMdFM are keen to emphasise that this document is designed to compliment and not replace existing equality legislation.

Please do take a read through the document and give us your views at lgbt@qub.ac.uk and we can pass them on at the meeting, or if you’d like to come along just send us a quick email to show your interest.

This meeting will take place on Tuesday 19 October 2010, 7.45 p.m – 10.00 pm in the Olympic 1 Suite, Holiday Inn, 22 Ormeau Avenue, Belfast BT2 8HS.

Student Council Nominations

27 09 2010

LGBT views are incredibly under-represented at Queen’s and we’re fed up of anti-gay decisions being pushed through our students union. HOWEVER now is YOUR opportunity to change this and get elected onto the student council. Stand up and be counted and most importantly help LGBT students to really have a voice and get things done for us in our student union.

First year students are much more likely to be elected, as well as postgrads and those on engineering and science courses. Arts, humanities and social sciences students face tough competition and will probably need to campaign and get a large number of people on their respective courses to vote for them!

The council only meets once every couple of months and there’s always free tea and coffee and some lovely sandwiches, worth it for the free food alone!

Online polling (via Queen’s Online) shall take place on Tuesday 19 October 2010, with the exception of the Open and Open First Year constituencies, for which online polling shall take place on Tuesday 26 October 2010.

Completed nomination forms must be returned in person to the 2nd Floor Reception in the Students’ Union. You may be asked to produce your student card in order to confirm your identity. Completed nomination forms may also be presented to Dominic Doherty (the Returning Officer). You are also required to return an equal opportunities monitoring form with your nomination form.

Nominations close at 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday 13 October 2010. Please note that nominations for the Open constituency and the Open First Year constituency close at 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday 20 October 2010.

Hello to everyone on Welcome and Orientation Week @ Queen’s University Belfast!

We’re geared up and really rather excited about the up and coming Freshers’ events so if you want to join the society, come along to a meeting and have some fun then you’re in for a treat. The Freshers’ Bazaar is on Wednesday the 29th of Sept between 10-3pm, here there will be lots of stalls representing most of the clubs and societies at Queen’s so you can see what they are about and sign up to as many or as few if as you wish. You can join the LGBT Society here for just £3 (a one time only offer as after freshers’ week its the princely sum of £4!) so come armed with your new address and student number and we’ll get it sorted for you :-)

The First Meeting will be on Thursday the 7th of Oct at 8pm, the room is yet to be booked but it will be in the Club Rooms, located on the Top Floor of the Student’s Union. This is just an informal meeting, we’ll introduce ourselves (the executive) and tell you a bit about the society, then we’ll have a few games (manatory to start learning some names!) and after all that is over with we’ll head down to Bar Sub for a social tipple. After the Union, if you want to, we’ll go out to the scene and visit Belfast’s gay bars. This is going to be a really fun night and there’s usually a good crowd of around 40 so be prepared to meet some new friends and a have a laugh.

Any questions, queries or problems? Then just send us a quick email to lgbt@qub.ac.uk and we’ll get back to you straight away.

See you all soon!

Welcome Freshers!

21 08 2010

To all of you who’ve recieved your A Level results this week

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S :-)

Hopefully you’ve been accepted to Queen’s University Belfast and you’re running around trying to get everything ready for September.

We’ve been busy and made a few things to make your transition to university even easier. Check out the ‘Downloads’ tab for our brand spanking new Fresher’s Guide leaflet download. It deals with the basics and compacts most of what this website says into two easy to read A4 pages, how brilliant is that?!

We can’t wait for the new year to begin and we hope to see you soon. Head over to the facebook page to keep up to date with all of our latest news and events!
